Berlin Regional Meeting, January 2016

Only in Berlin: Tar Heels get together in the office that used to belong to the leader of the German Democratic Republic.

A group of Carolina alumni from various academic backgrounds and from various different classes came together in January 2016 to meet at the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), right in the heart of Berlin. ESMT president and professor Jörg Rocholl gave his fellow Tar Heels a tour of the historic building housing the business school: Professor Rocholl started his academic career as an assistant professor at UNC’s Kenan-Flager Business School.

History in the heart of the German capital

The campus tour featured a stunning array of historical observations, from Erich Honecker’s office to the balcony that – legend has it – Karl Liebknecht stood on while proclaiming the socialist republic of Germany in 1918. After the tour, the German Tar Heels took a short walk through the crisp Berlin winter air to a nearby restaurant. Over dinner, the group reminisced about Chapel Hill and discussed a whole range of topics, from living in Berlin to watching UNC games to the 2016 presidential elections.

Future meetings are in the making, so stay tuned for updates on our website and social media outlets and let us know if you have any suggestions or ideas.
